The story of who we take ourselves to be can never be concluded. The story of who we are can never fully be told, since at any future point the apparent certainties of the present can be re-visited and re-viewed. Because of the reflexive feature of knowing, any experience of oneself exists in a ‘time’ (Davies, 1993, p. 28).

Throughout your pre-internship year, you will be experiencing a different time and place in your professional journey, a ‘process of becoming’. As your instructors for these next two semesters, we are excited to be able to travel alongside of you for this important part of your journey as teacher. Welcome!

We will be using this blog as an online “place” to communicate important messages and dates, to post assigned readings/podcasts/links, and to also provide a public forum for you to post questions and responses. We remind you that this is a professional blog and is an open forum for anyone to read. Visit our world map to see how many visitors from around the world drop in to see what we are doing! :)

We will also be using our InTheField Wikispace throughout the year as our Collaborative Online Space. Our 2008-2009 students have many of their created resources on this site to share with each other but also with you. You will all be contributors to this wiki throughout the year.

Special thanks to Stephanie, Justine, Sarah, Dionne, Sarah and Erin for coming to share their internship experiences and portfolios. What amazing stories they had to share and we all learned so much. We are SO grateful that they took time out of their busy schedules to share – each one of them was SO inspiring – WOW!! (and….Julie was roaming around the room feeling very proud…) :)

Visit the websites below to learn more and to explore the many possibilities ahead! You will soon be heading to another learning ’space’ and ‘place’.

Some people had asked for an alternative way to create a portfolio. Here are the guidelines for a simpler one. Remember you don’t have to included everything suggested for the artifacts.

Alternative Portfolio Format

All pre-interns must complete the Work-Based Learning Consent & Agreement form and return it to the Professional Development & Field Experience Office this week. You completed this form for the fall placement but you must complete it for the winter semester for it to be valid.

Thanks and we wish you all the best!

Please be sure to visit the “In The Field” wiki at inthefield.wikispaces.com to sign up for your meeting with your advisor. Be sure to write a few lines (more than just the title) that will tweak their interest in your unit. Make it interesting, mysterious and fun and they will be so ‘engaged’ when you meet with them! :)

Some of you have viewed this video clip and expressed an interest to revisit it. This clip is an inspirational tool for you to see yourself as a professional dedicated to giving 212 Degrees to your studies this semester. This class is all about continuing your ‘process of becoming’ a teacher. This pass/fail class is designed as such so that it is a safe learning space to discuss openly, challenge your own beliefs and assumptions, take risks, explore engaging teaching approaches, and learn with and from your colleagues. The way you approach this class will be a reflection of how you will approach your future professional development as the ‘process of becoming’ a teacher is never-ending.

View the TeacherTube video 212 Degrees and think about how you are going to show your commitment, passion and professionalism throughout this semester…in all your classes. We look forward to continuing to be with you on this journey!

Self-Portraits Bulletin BoardCan’t wait for you to share your individual self-portraits and to explain the significance of your unique creations. We understand that many of you need time to complete your painting and we will discuss with you how to best provide the space and place. This picture is an example of how one elementary classroom chose to display their artistic representation of who they are as individuals and how they each bring a uniqueness to their community of learners.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please take some time to reflect on your experience at last Friday’s Self-Portrait Workshop. Write a thoughtful response to this posting that can be  shared with Sarah Longman. We want her to know just how much we appreciate her taking the time to purchase materials, to plan the workshop, and to take time away from her very busy full-time consultant position. As you reflect, think about:  What did you learn from this activity? How will you apply what you learned? How did this self-portrait activity help you in your ‘process of becoming’ a teacher? Why is this project significant to your learning? How do you see this activity making a difference for your students of the future?

We look forward to reading your responses and to sharing all responses with Sarah.  Thanks!
